The young daughter of Loki, Hel is the Goddess of the dead. Half living body, half rotting corpse, in her Hall are those who died of illness.
Eventually, she and her realm (also named Hel) became associated with the punishment of the angel Lucifer in Christianity, leading to the modern concept of Hell
